Welwyn Garden City was built as a low rise town with family homes with gardens.

Recently many applications from developers have been put in for high rise flats within walking distance of the train station; presumably with the view to attract people who work in London. See the new Wheat Quarter Development

Many issues would arise from this: The people who occupy these flats will eventually want families, and that would put a strain on:

  • The housing stock, which is already in short supply, would further increase house costs, leaving the native young having to leave WGC to find a house to raise their families.
  • The schools, hospitals, doctors would also be put under increasing strain.
  • The concept of being a Garden City will be in name only.

A Facebook group. Keep the G in WGC  is keen to highlight these issues; this is a public group.
